For A Front End Projector, Am I Better Getting A 480p For Now Or Spend 4x More Money For 1080p?

Written By: admin on July 5, 2009 23 Comments

I am projecting onto an 80″ screen. I am going to get either a Optomo, benq w100 or infocus n72 16:9 home theater projector.
I am leaning toward the infocus as it has great reviews, better dark levels and… well looks cool. I am hooking up a HTPC, DVD (480p) and a Wii (480p). $500-600 range. I am planning to get a screen too.
I know that the standard is heading toward 1080p, but I don’t have any content that will really utilize it at this point except my htpc, but this will most likely be playing non hd divx content anyway.
I think I am better off saving my money for now and upgrading to a 1080p when my bulb burns out in 2-3 years as they will cost less. They may even something better by then as well.
I must have over 400 DVDs in 480p widescreen.
I hate when people say regular dvds look better on HD. Most of these people were comparing it to their old 480i standard tvs. Actually, I would think a 854×480 would be the ideal for dvd as it wont have to stretch it.

I think your already made your mind and you look at everything already. But if you need someone to agree, I do agree with you that 480p will be good enough. Some people like scaled images, I personally hate them, I seen DVD played using a ($15,000) FOLSOM scaler projected on a 15K lumens 1080p capable projector and I trully hate it how they looked. IMO, the 480p look the best. But for some weird reason everyone else liked the 1080i over all the other images (go figure) and we ended up using that. I say you have a good plan. Just remember that the bulbs do last only 2000 hours at best and the last 20% of the life of the bulb is about 50% dimmer than the first 10% (ie the bulb does not stay as bright all the time). Also, do not move the projector ever until the fan stops unless you want to gamble on buying a new bulb. In addition, many projectors can do 720p for not much more money so you may want to consider those if you plan to watch some TV.

480 (i or p) on an 80″ screen will look pretty poor. 480p through an upscaling player (or onto a 720p or 1080i projector with a good scaler) will look pretty good. Not HD DVD / Blu-Ray good, but certainly much better than 480. No point in a 1080p projector unless you intend to feed it Blu-Ray or HD DVD.
So … go for a 720p/1080i projector, not 480p. As a bonus it will give you an excellent HDTV picture too.
Personally, I use a good upscaling DVD player (Oppo) and project through a 720p projector (Canon SX-60) onto a 110″ screen. My collection of normal DVDs look pretty good to me and HDTV (satellite) is great. … so I know from personal experience.
    Hope this helps.

You could also get a xbox 360 or ps3, that way you can play HD games or watch HD-DVDs (xbox) or Blu-ray (ps3) movies.
Also, both the 360 and ps3 will upscale your existing DVD’s making them look a little better … but it is fake HD, nothing compared to hd-dvd or BR
It depends on how important HD is to you. I have to say I love it, I personally would get an HD projector without question. But remember, it doesn’t have to be 1080p, I garuntee you will see an amazing improvement with 720p video playback over 480p.
Have you seen any HD stuff through a projector? Perhaps you should try viewing some content before making your mind up.

I am using a 720p projector, the Mitsubishi HC3000U, and love the image I am getting with 480p DVDs. I don’t think you need to get the 1080p right now. What content are you going to view??? If you are a gamer then you might have some content, otherwise don’t go for it yet. I am also using a Tribal Projector Screen with my projector. The image is spectacular!!!

We are far from 1080p being the standard. 720p is not even the standard yet. Look at how many TV stations that are still at 480p. It’s like 90% stations.
I am confused why you are not considering a 720p projector. This would seem to be the better solution, as HD is 720p and so is many gaming consoles.
You can get a IN76 for $2000. It is the big brother of the IN72. If you are on a budget, then go ahead and get the IN72 for $500. Personally, I would buy a LCD or plasma over a projector. Who wants to spend $400 on a lamp every year?
